UMPIRING OPPORTUNITIES

Throughout this season many of our junior girls have started to learn the skills of umpiring. Some of these girls may have even umpired a game that your daughter played, they are supporting the club and even making a little money too. Many of the senior women umpires act as mentors to the younger girls right up until the girls are ready to give it a go by themselves. Congratulations to Ella Hookway (JT1 player and Owls coach) who achieved her HA Community umpire accreditation at the U11 Southern Cross Tournament held a few weeks ago. If any girl from U13 upwards would like to start umpiring in Season 2017 please let us know at nsjwhc@gmail.com.

Tip of the Week

Please remember to be respectful of umpires and coaches. Many of the umpires we encounter in the U7, 9, 11 and 13’s are young players themselves who in some cases are still learning how to be effective umpires. Even some of our coaches are young U15 players trying to help our young girls. Don’t forget to that you can say a simple Thank You to our coaches and umpires for all their hard work….it will surely make them smile.

Match Report – JG2 (formerly known as U13a)

Norths U13 A girls were graded up into the junior grass JG2 competition.  They now compete against girls 14-18.  Our girls are aged 11/12. Sat 23/4/16 was their 1st game, they took on South Brisbane Eagles (SBE).

The girls endured hot conditions, they ran the length and breadth of the field countless times, they were physically spent come full time.

As one of the parents, I believe I speak for all parents when I say I couldn't be prouder of the whole teams performance. They displayed great skill & amazing team work.  The midfields and fullbacks defence was inspiring strong. The opposition were restricted from our 25 for the majority of the match.  Beautiful passing and field awareness from the girls allowed the forwards to break free and charge down field. The North girls, relatively small in stature when compared to the opposition showed great strength and determination to over power the opposition when challenged one on one for the ball. At half time the girls lead 1:0. A late surge in the 2nd half from the competition, taking advantage of our fatigue, had our goalie facing the charge of 2 forwards. It was one on one, the strike was good, but our goalie stood strong and produced an amazing save and deflected the ball back into play. Amazingly, the girls tapped into stored reserves, they brought the ball back down field and scored their second goal within seconds of the final siren.

Congratulations girls an amazing effort.

Congratulations Charlie Mitchell and Qld 1

Congratulations to Charlie Mitchell and the Queensland 1 team on their win at the recent U15 National Hockey Championship held recently in Wollongong. Here is Charlie proudly wearing her gold medal.

Match Report U9 - Pythons

So the season kicked off with carnival day for U9’s Pythons with a lot of edge.

No-one wanted to sub, twitching on the side line to get back on, ‘chomping on the bit', (maybe mouthguard), to get out there and prove they’re back with more force and eyes on a win! And they did it……..

Well done to this amazing team who finished with a 5-0, first game and their 2nd game, a little more challenging but still squeezed a, 1-0.

Watch out…….. The Pythons are not slithering across the ground they’re a quick moving team of super snakes.

Thanks for the contribution Pythons!

Match Report – U7 Kingfishers

The U7 Kingfishers 2016 team made their debut on Field 7 at Rasey Park on Saturday. Great game Kingfishers, what great display of new and old players working together as a team! The opposition were enthusiastic and had a secret weapon duck in their goal to keep their team focused. Coach Jess reminded the Kingfishers of everything they had been practising at training resulting in  a successful outcome for the team. Go U7 Kingfishers.

We will be supporting the sessions with season coaching plans. The coach will run essentially a Level 1 style coaching course over three nights (third night to be decided) and is available to anyone who wants to be involved. I thoroughly recommend putting your hand up as it is one of the most fun and rewarding experiences I have had current North Junior Girls President and Coach Adam Hookway.

Its almost your time U7 and U9. First practice session is Wednesday 16th March from 5-6. This is just the start of exciting times ahead

Parking at Norths Hockey Club

As many of you are aware Mirrabooka Bridge has been closed to vehicle traffic for most of 2016. This has meant that parking is very limited around the club house. We ask all parents to please be patient during this time and try to allow another five minutes for parking and walking to the club. The safety of our children is important!

Footwear at Downey and Rasey Parks

While its tempting to buy a set of Football Boots for your daughter to get a grip on the grassy fields of Downey or Rasey Park you need to be aware that this is a waste of your hard earned cash.  Football Boots (or tags) are banned from both grounds. Children will not be permitted to play if they are seen to be wearing this footwear.

Tip of the Week

Girls remember - Call for it. If you are out in space with no defenders around you and you see an opportunity for an attacker to pass the ball your way make sure you Call for it. Sometimes your team mates are so focused on moving the ball that they dont always look up (previously covered in Newsletter 3) so if you are in space take advantage of it and Call for it. This tip proudly provided by an awesome Hockey Mum.

Congratulations

CONGRATULATIONS to Charlie Mitchell on her selection to the Under 15 girls Queensland Number 1 team! Charlie has been playing with North’s since she was 4 years old and has gone from strength to strength. Charlie is a great example of what dedication and continued training can achieve!

Congratulations also to the girls who made the U18 Brisbane teams…..Grace Mitchell, Sophie Shirley, Sheridan Walsh, Sarah Bartle, Maddie Bell and Courtenay Brown. WoooHooo!

Tuckshop Convenor – We Need You!

The all important “Tuckshop” needs a new convenor. Our previous convenor is leaving the country and hence has had to give up one of the best jobs in the club. Most of our returning club members can attest to the fact that this can be a saviour on a busy Wednesday evening when the kids need feeding after a big training session there is no better BBQ than at North’s. So we need YOU! The job is not a difficult one, picking up food and being on hand each Wednesday night to instruct the many volunteers in food prep is the hardest part. Perhaps you can share the job between a few people. There are instructions on hand to guide you and “Tanya the extraordinaire” will still be on hand for guidance.  Please if you can help in this all important role email thecommittee@nsjwhc.org.au.

Volunteers ALWAYS Needed

Like many clubs North’s Junior Women’s Hockey relies on the help of volunteers. From our President and Secretary, our ground staff, the coaches and team managers, the tuckshop and bar staff and even the humble newsletter writer - we are all volunteers. There are so many people who give their time willingly and our latest volunteer has taken on the auspicious role of Uniform Convenor. Thank You to Korrin who has stepped up to help out!

Volunteers will also be needed to help out for our duties at Rasey Park. Saturday March 19th at Rasey Park we need volunteers to help mow & whipper snip around Rasey Park Clubhouse & goal nets. Volunteers are required to bring their own mowers and whipper snippers please. So after you have voted in the local council election, come on down to Rasey Park.

Online Uniform Ordering

Very soon we will be releasing information for how to order uniforms at our on line shop. In the mean time for those girls that are new to North’s please note that a new pair of socks will be available to you when you purchase a shirt. You will not need to add socks to your on-line order and when you pick up your shirt….we will give you your socks.

For those new to the club the link to the Hockey Queensland registration can be found at our website www.nsjwhc.org.au under the Season 16 tab you will find Hockey Qld registration. You will need to choose from either U10 or Junior 10-17 years option. For those new to hockey you will need to enter your email address and make a password. First and last name, date of birth will be your daughter’s details. For those who are returning you would have registered your daughter last year and developed a profile, please use this to re-register your daughter.

We also received information from Hockey Queensland today that there is a special offer. Hockey Queensland will be sending out “Welcome to Hockey” packs to every player that registers with Hockey Queensland this year.

Job Vacant – Desperately Seeking Help – Fashion Police!

We aren’t desperately seeking Susan but we are desperately seeking volunteers to help with the uniform “shop” once hockey training officially starts on Wednesday 16th March.  Many hands make light work and this job should only take an hour on a Wednesday evening for the first four weeks of the season. The uniforms have been ordered it is just a matter of making sure our girls look good in their finery. Even if you can only spare a little time to help in suiting up our new little members in the finest hockey club colours it would be appreciated. Please email  thecommittee@nsjwhc.org.au if you can spare just a little time to help. (N.B If your name IS Susan and you can help please we are really desperately seeking you!)

Parking at North’s Hockey Club

As many of you are aware Mirrabooka Bridge has been closed to vehicle traffic for most of 2016. This has meant that parking is very limited around the club house. We ask all parents to please be patient during this time and try to allow another five minutes for parking and walking to the club. The safety of our children is important!

Not long to go – Excitement Overload – Check the Calendar

On Sunday 28th February the first trials for U11 and U13 will be conducted. Please check in with the calendar that can be found at our website to keep up to date with what’s happening. It also won’t be long till we see some of our Under 9s beginning their training at the club….Wednesday 16th March we look forward to welcoming some new girls and seeing some familiar faces…remember check that calendar as it’s updated regularly.

Footwear at Downey and Rasey Parks

While it’s tempting to buy a set of Football Boots for your daughter to get a grip on the grassy fields of Downey or Rasey Park you need to be aware that this is a waste of your hard earned cash.  Football Boots (or tags) are banned from both grounds. Children will not be permitted to play if they are seen to be wearing this footwear.

Tip of the Week

Ball fixation is a very real problem. The desire to hit that little ball flying down the field is strong and many girls forget to raise their head in their excitement to potentially score a goal from the halfway line. Remember before committing to that all mighty hit….. “Look Up”. As the girls practise their pushing and hitting skills at home remind them to “Look Up” you never know if a plate glass window might be ahead.  Thanks for this tip from one of our Hockey Mums….keep them coming.

Newsletter 2 - Season 16

Newsletter Number Two for Season 2016 is filled with reminders that are important for you, your daughter and North’s. But first WELCOME to so many new families that signed up during a raining, sunny, windy, hot and humid Saturday morning. It was fantastic to see so many bright, shiny and eager young faces ready to start their hockey career. We have now more than 150 young girls playing for North’s hockey….awesome!

Jobs JOBS JOBS JOBS

The North’s Junior Women’s Hockey club is staffed by volunteers who do it for the love! Every year we ask for all important volunteers that help keep the club running. In coming newsletters we will be advertising these all important roles. Some come with great responsibilities and some come with minimal responsibilities but all are equally important. PLEASE if you can spare some time to assist the club it ultimately helps your daughters.

DESPERATELY seeking Age Group Co-ordinators! Please if you can assist let us know your interest. If you are currently an Age Group Co-ordinator and would like to continue please let us know.

Please see the front page on the web site for any jobs that you might be able to assist with. THANKS

Tip of the Week

You can never yell often enough “Sticks Down”. This call to arms is often met with blank stares in the early years as young players are more inclined to twirl their hockey stick in the air than have it firmly placed against the ground. In teenage years a look of disdain is more likely as you yell “Sticks down girls!” but it can still make you feel like you are being an encouraging and helpful parent.

Tip of the Week

Some parents wonder ‘what words of encouragement can I say to the team from the sideline’. Many turns of phrase can be used but a personal favourite is “Challenge Them!!!” This call to arms can lift the spirit of the team, encourage them to go forth and conquer the foe without being too aggressive.  Each week we will be sharing a tip, just like this, please feel free to send me some of your favourites.
